Thanks to Thomas’s good contacts, we were able to get ourselves booked into his friend Milton’s “Kwalape Lodge” on the previous evening. We therefore wake up on the outskirts of Kasane, a small town in Botswana.
Breakfast will come later, as we use the first hours for an early morning safari. It is anything but cool, actually quite warm, but we do beat the heat.
Once again, we see giraffes that reach the tops of the trees on their long legs and nibble on young leaves – a total of about 35 kilos a day, including dry animal bones for their calcium balance. There are also small wonders to marvel at. For example, the “Dung Beetle”, a beetle that can roll a ball of dung which may be many times its own body weight.
After the early morning safari tour, we are allowed to rest in a camp and are served brunch. Memories come flooding back of how I experienced an overnight safari in this very park with my nephew 9 years ago: Especially of the nightly roar of a lion that sounded like it was standing in front of my tent.
