We were still stroking the cats yesterday, when the heavens suddenly opened their floodgates. After all the heat, we had almost forgotten about the rainy season.

By the time we have finished our Full English Breakfast at the Golden Pillow Lodge, the rain has let off steam. There are huge puddles outside, but the sky clears quickly. We are on our way to the eastern tip of the Southern Province and the sun is already beating down on us again.

It takes us about an hour to reach Mazabuka, then we continue to the so-called T-junction, where traders sell all sorts of things, including 40 centimetre long dried sausages. We leave the turn-off to Lusaka on the left and turn right.

A good hour and a half and a wonderful drive on the T2 mountain road later, we reach Chirundu, a non-exciting town on the border with Zimbabwe. From here, it’s another 7 kilometres on a bumpy gravel road until we almost pass the signpost for “Gwabe Lodge”. The very last stretch through the forest and later steeply downhill to the parking lot is covered at what feels like a snail’s pace. Then we arrive and enjoy the view of the Kafue River. After our afternoon nap, there is still enough time to drive to that place where the Zambezi and Kafue rivers meet.
