Deep and sound sleep in the beds of a lodge after two intense days of travelling! Now we are ready to explore the southern tip of Lake Tanganyika, which is over 670 kilometres long.

Mpulungu is a harbour town with a population of around 10,000 people. Ships from the Congo, Tanzania and Burundi arrive here in Zambia’s largest port. For landlocked Zambia, which has no access to the sea, these are important transportation links.

After breakfast, we go straight to the beach, where we find children playing and women doing their laundry. We carry on to Kalambo Falls Lodge, which is an hour’s boat ride from Mpulungu. It is my first lodge that can only be reached by water.

The lodge is something special – because of its location, the good food and its stylish interior, which combines African and European elements.

From here one can also do a hike to the Kalambo Falls, which is not the usual majestic curtain of water, but a very high single waterfall. Actually 235 metres high and thus more than twice as high as the Victoria Falls.

Once I’ve had some good breakfast tomorrow, we can tackle that.
