Today we are taking off to Africa from Frankfurt – with our Airbus, whose windshield is nicely cleaned before take-off.
A few hours will not do the job. If you want to travel to Zambia or Zimbabwe, you can expect a flight that takes at least 14 hours, maybe a few hours longer. And there will always be transfers
20 years ago I flew to Lusaka, the Zambian capital, for the first time. Back then, I flew westwards with British Airways from Frankfurt to London Heathrow, and then directly to Lusaka on an overnight flight. But these flights are history, and other airlines have conquered the market with their services.
One of these is Ethiopian Airlines (EA), a company with a modern and well-maintained fleet. The food doesn’t always make hearts beat faster, but the prices are rather reasonable, even if they haven’t been quite as attractive since 2023.
Today we fly off as a group in Frankfurt at around half past nine with EA. It’s an overnight flight in a large Airbus to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, where the African Union has its headquarters. Those who had hoped for dinner can look forward to a midnight meal. It will be a short night, as we won’t see the sunrise in Addis until after the stopover landing.
