It’s Sunday and we wake up in Lusaka. After Saturday’s improvised school visit for our small group, we bid farewell to the Southern Province and set off in the afternoon.
Zambia is a Christian nation, as stated in the constitution. Going to church is mostly given top priority by Zambians, whether it happens on a Sunday or, in some protestant churches, on Saturdays. We decide to attend a special kind of Catholic church service – in the UNZA Chapel.
UNZA is the “University of Zambia”. The large campus is located in the east of the metropolis, and this is where the chapel is located, where Catholic students celebrate church service and whoever else would like to attend. Compared to German churches, there is quite a lot of activity around the altar and a lot of rhythmic singing. However, not quite as much as in some Pentecostal churches I have experienced.
We take it easy in the afternoon. Our couple from Hamburg would still like to spend two days in Zambia’s second largest national park, South Luangwa, in the east of the country before flying back to Germany. While having tea at the Christmas-decorated shopping mall “EastPark”, we search for nicely priced domestic flights.
