Despite sore muscles from the previous day’s climbing adventures, we have an early start today. At 7 a.m. we set off in the direction of Botswana, for a day trip to Chobe National Park.

Here, they can still be found in large numbers: The elephant population in Chobe National Park at the border between Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana is impressive. We first see them from the water during our one-hour boat safari. But the guides pay particular attention to the hippos. They can capsize a boat in the blink of an eye, if one has misinterpreted the signs in the water.

After lunch, we let the worst of the heat pass and then head into the park in a jeep. The impalas, a species of antelope, are as shy as deer and beautiful to look at. We have no trouble spotting buffalo, giraffe and zebra, only the lions keep us waiting and hoping.

When we finally set off for Victoria Falls at 5 p.m., everyone is full of regret. Should we have booked an overnight safari in the national park after all?
